Critique from judge Kate Lowson (Jengachenga) September 2024

I would like to thank the committee of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Great Britain for this important opportunity to judge their prestigious championship show 2024.  Thank you to my efficient and supportive stewards Toni Agnew and Jenny Vincent.  Finally thank you to all the exhibitors for such a fantastic entry, all exhibits were proudly presented.

Overall assessment, all ridges acceptable and males were correct.A small number of level bites were observed also a small number of kinked tails.  All white permissible.  All exhibits presented were in full fitness and health.

I think the breed needs to take consideration on head and eye shape, a number of triangular shaped heads and eyes were evident.  I also observed a number of exhibits above breed standard height and heavy in bone, we must be mindful of the history of our breed and core purpose and function.  All my main winners are a true representation of the breed standard presenting an exciting, healthy future for the breed.

It was such an honour to judge these bright eyed, energetic bundles of joy. I believe it was so important these babies enjoyed the experience and had fun with their handler.

Baby Puppy Dog – (4 – 1 absent)

This young man simply shone in this class.  5 month old red wheaten boy, handsome clean head with bright eye, intelligent expression and correct ear set.  Lovely balanced profile with good angulation front and rear.  Excellent shoulder placement, tight feet and good bone.  Slightly bum high in topline expected at this young age,moderate sloping croup and correct tailset.  At such a young age he was sound on the move and handled well.  Best Baby Puppy in Show.

Litter brother to 1.  Longer cast and more rangey in profile.  Lovely masculine head and strong neck.  Balanced shape with good rear angulation, good length of ribbing and tight feet.  He was obviously excited by this first outing but moved well when settled.

Another 8 month, red wheaten boy.  Smaller in height but packs in a lot of good qualities. Expressive head, strong neck on to well laid back shoulder.  Good feet, good depth of brisket and length of ribbing. Topline slightly bum high at present, sloping croup and correcttailset.  Good rear angulation with well let down hocks.  Such a happy boy on the move in the ring today.

This 10 month old, light wheaten boy stood out in this class; handled to perfection and moved at the right pace.  Handsome head with kind expression and correct earset.  Strong neck leading on to laid back shoulder,excellent length of upper arm with tight pasterns and good feet.  Good infill, depth of brisket with well sprung ribs and arch of loin presenting a balanced profile.  Gorgeous topline, moderate sloping croup and correct tailset.  Excellent rear angulation with good width of second thigh and well let down hocks.  Balanced and effortless movement who could work all day.  I really liked this boy who competed hard for Best Puppy in Show, just missing out in maturity.  I will watch his development closely.  BPD & Reserve Best Puppy in Show.

Moved well.

Litter brother to 1^st in yearling dog.  A lot to like about this substantial boy.  Masculine head of correct planes, earset and intelligent eye.  Strong, long neck on to excellent shoulder assembly.  Strong straight forelegs, elbows close to body, correct feet and balanced profile.  Excellent depth of brisket, well sprung ribs, arch of loin with level topline.  Good rear angulation and width of second thigh.  Moved with drive and sound in profile.  I think this boy should have an interesting future.

I have written “I just love this boy”.  For me he is a true representation of the breed standard, perfect size and stature.  He stands proud with an aloof air and inquisitive eye.  He never took his eyes off me and dared me not to place him first place.

7 year old red wheaten boy.  Masculine, handsome head of correct planes.  Good earset, strong neck free of throatiness leading on to clean sloping shoulders.  Good length of upper arm, strong pasterns and elbows close to the body.  Excellent depth of brisket with excellent length of ribbing. Level topline, correct rise over well muscled loin.  Moderate sloping croup and correct tail placement.  Balanced profile with excellent rear angulation, depth of first and second thigh with well let down hocks.  On the move he strides out, moves with purpose and drive, just effortless.  Delighted to award him the DCC and Reserve Best in Show& Best Veteran in Show.

This girl is the epitome of the breed standard.  She instantly caught my eye in profile and did not disappoint when I was able to assess individually.  3 year old wheaten bitch with beautiful feminine head.  Bright and knowledgeable eye with correct earset.  Long, elegant neck leading on to sloping lay of shoulder.  Excellent front assembly, excellent length of upper arm with strong pasterns.Elbows held close enabling reach on the move.  Well sprung ribs with excellent length of loin.  Level topline, correct rise over well muscled loin with clean sloping croup and tailset.  Excellent rear angulation with strong upper and second thigh.  Strong pasterns, well let down hocks and tight feet.  On the move she simply excels.  Her handler is there to simply hold the lead, this girls drives herself.  Effortless, ground covering strides.  Foot placement true fore and aft with drive.  It has been a total honour to judge this bitch.  Delighted to award her BCC, I believe her crowning CC and Best in Show.

Pretty 5 year old livernose girl.  Excellent pigmentation and correct eye colour.  Feminine head, flat skull and correct earset.  Elegent neck on to strong shoulders.  Excellent front and rear angulation giving a balanced profile.  Deep brisket, well sprung ribs and good length of loin.  Level topline with sloping croup.  Well muscled hindquarters with good width of first and second thigh.  Moves with reach and drive at one with her handler.  Delighted to award RBCC.
